The GPP Bhutan team participated in the 2nd Annual Environmental Fair and Research Symposium hosted by the Bhutan Ecological Society (BES) held on the 22nd and 23rd of August 2014. The Symposium was organized by the BES to provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss and understand the various initiatives on the environmental and ecological front in the country.

On the first day, researchers from the government and students from tertiary institutions across the country presented their research papers and showcased their research through various posters. Some of the research topics discussed ranged from issues pertaining to human-wildlife conflict, use of GIS techniques to study paddy cultivation in Paro and an evaluation of environmental attitudes of graduating students at the Royal Thimphu College enrolled in the Environmental Studies program. The Symposium was attended by around 100 participants and with a good mix of policy makers, researchers, implementers, journalists and representation from the civil society sector. The GPP team presented on the GPP Bhutan project and explained the cross-sectoral linkages the project offers and the opportunities to create environmental and social benefits for the Bhutanese economy.

The second day of the event was an “Environmental Fair”, organized at the town square in Thimphu. The GPP Bhutan team displayed and disseminated information about the project and interacted with the people visiting the fair, many of whom had very little idea about green/sustainable procurement. The GPP Bhutan team was able to distribute the publications, newsletter and respond to queries from the public on aspects of GPP/SPP.
